Message from the Premier of Queensland
My Government is proud that Queensland will once again host the Australian Women in Music Awards in 2019.
This is our opportunity to showcase and honour the many talented women who are creating fabulous music, or are behind the scenes supporting the flourishing Australian music industry.
I am delighted the Awards are returning to Queensland, home to some of this country’s finest female musicians who have written and played some of the greatest Australian music. Yet gender parity is still some way off in the music industry.
Only one-fifth of the members of the Australasian Performing Rights Association identify as female. A little more than one-quarter of senior and strategic roles in key music industry associations are held by women. Female artists tend to earn less than male performers.
In 2019, we are celebrating 90 years of International Women’s Day being observed in Brisbane. We have made many great strides towards gender equality in the past nine decades, but we have much more to do.
We are home to thousands of talented female artists and music industry participants, who deserve recognition for their wonderful work here and across the world.
